Arhan Ertan

Short Bio: 

Arhan Ertan is currently an assistant professor of economics & finance at the department of International Trade at Boğaziçi University. He received his PhD in Economics from Brown University (2007) and have MA degrees in Economics from both Brown University (2002) and Boğaziçi University (1999) as well as a BS degree in Engineering from Boğaziçi University (1997). He also completed the course work of the Management PhD program at Boğaziçi University (2001). During the academic year before he joined the faculty of Boğaziçi University, he was a visiting of assistant professor of economics at Brown University.

His academic interest spans various topics related to economic development (with a long-term and institutional perspective), behavioral economics (focusing on the role of personal characteristics and the efficiency of institutions), international economics (both trade and finance), and international conflict. In his research, which is mostly empirical and interdisciplinary, he is aiming to provide new perspectives for explaining the developmental differences and problems observed around the globe. His academic work has been published in prestigious international journals and the one published at European Economic Review earned the ‘Most Cited Article Award’. He was the main advisor of the dissertations of 9 PhD and 3 masters’ students.

During the earlier years of his career, he held various full-time faculty positions in some of the most prestigious universities in USA such as, New York University (2011-2012), Boston University (2009-2011), Tufts University (2008-2009) and Babson College (2007-2008) where he taught numerous courses at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels. Between 2012 and 2018, he worked as an assistant professor of economics at the Faculty of Management of Kadir Has University, where he organized two international finance conferences , several workshops and a large number of economics and finance seminars. He also taught courses, as a visiting faculty, at several other universities such as Boston College (2009), Northeastern University (2008 and 2010), University of Rhode Island (2006), Sabancı University (summer of 2007), Özyeğin University (summer of 2013), Koç University (summer of 2014) and Boğaziçi University (several semesters within the period of 2007 – 2017).

His pre-PhD job experience includes the following: economist at the research department of Finansbank (1998), directing member of a research project (1997) jointly conducted by DPT (State Planning Organization) and Boğaziçi University.
